  • Distinguishing characteristics:  Hermit crabs lack a shell and must use the shell of another animal.  One of their claws is larger than the other.

 

In the Wild

  • Habitat:  Hermit crabs live on the beaches, mud flats and shallow waters of the Bay.
  • Diet:  Hermit crabs eat algae and detritus.
  • Predators:  The hermit crab is eaten by large fish, blue crabs and snails.
  • Size:  The size of the hermit crab depends on the species.
  • Breeding:  Hermit crabs go through several stages of life cycles including a free swimming stage.
